Modding a ML

After recently purchasing a Valkyrie, the seller threw in an unassembled Sentinel free of charge. Score! Both models came new-on-sprue, with instructions, at less than helf retail price. If I wasn't a terrible dancer I would dance right now. Ahem, it was very cool of him to do that.

For starters the  armaments needed a little beefing up. I had the idea of running cables through the eye sockets of the skull emblem.

A couple of guitar strings will do the trick

The normal mounting position is the hole below the cockpit, but I really wanted to try something different. I thought it would look cool with the weapon following the pilot's  line of sight.

Pin in place and ready to glue. I also cut and refit the feet around the terrain chunks.

I was slightly concerned with the tension the strings/cables added on the weapon, but it held firm and adds a nice touch of detail.

To keep the cables tight a staple was added on the Missile Launcher. It was slightly tricky to keep in place, but that's probably because it was a last second addition.

A few more details were added like spikes and an impaled torso. I opted for the open canopy so the pilot would be more visible. The spikes are from old sprues I had lying around.

I'm satisfied with the results so far. All that's missing are more chaos-y bits (you can never have enough spikes). I haven't decided if (or how) claws will be added to the feet. They look cool on the drawing board, but I don't want the model looking too eclectic with pieces just strewn about.

More pics will be up later this week. Cya then!

Attack of the RED HATs!

More pics of the Renegade IG army. This time it's of the first batch of troops to test the paint scheme.

The bodies are from a set of troopers I got a few years back. One model was chopped up to later be used as an objective marker. That project, however, was put on hold since it didn't work the way I hoped. The other four troopers I used for testing paint schemes.

Now that the Renegade project is going, nearly anything that isn't nailed down is going into this project lol. My primary goal is to build the army as creatively and inexpensive as possible. Troops, like the ones above, are fairly easy to come by. A lot of times people will disregard a model because it has a really rough looking paintjob or some wear-n-tea. Armor, like a Basilisk or Valkyrie, can be quite expensive especially when armies require lots of them.

Fortunately there's eBay and I've had some luck finding good deals. I managed to grab a few Leman Russ tanks, a Valkyrie, and a Baneblade all at good prices. With any luck I'll be able to fill in some more gaps in the list without paying too much  :)

Traitor IG

Work continues on the Renegade IG army.

I was a bit reserved on creating this army, mostly due to the fact that GW keeps raising prices so often. Thanks to eBay, however, and some *cough* bartering with my FLGS, I was able to obtain a few good deals and get the army started.

The model is from the Colonel Schaeffer's Last Chancers set (the Hero). He is a cool model, but needed some modifications to make him a bit more ...chaos-y. Both arms were removed and replaced with a power fist and a CSM plasma gun. I don't know why I added the plasma gun. It was the only gun that looked cool so I'm going to make it work. The head was also upgraded to a cool gas mask with officer's hat (I can't remember where it's from though). Plasticard was used to make the claws, though I don't see them lasting very long without a lot of modification.

I have a lot more plastic and pewter staring back at me demanding more attention. Who am I to deny the Chaos Gods?  :P

More pics to come including the Penal Legion Mutants. Cya then!

Bathed in.... mud?

The Bloodletters took a Devlin mud bath followed by some brown ink on the rocks. I'm satisfied with the results so far, especially with the Burgandy primer (considering it was an alternative color).

Kharnak is the first Pewter model I used this color on. I wasn't very pleased with the way it was turning out (pink meat), but after a wash of 50:50 Devlin mud/Badab black it's starting to look promising.

Nurgle: Plague Grinder

Working on a wireframe of the PlagueGrinder. Currently he's atop a regular Soul Grinder's framework, but once this guy is done I'll start on his chassis. It will have larger back legs with smaller front ones (indicating his huge girth).

This model (torso) will also sit on a separate 60mm base to work as a Great Unclean One as well.

The Nurgle Plague Grinder faces an Ultra Marines Captain

Size Comparison; The PB is about the same height as a normal SG.

RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!

The Ultra Marines launch a counter attack

Bloodthirster: GS gap filling and Texturing

The Bloodthirster is primed and ready to go. You can see what a difference Green Stuff adds to the model. To get this effect I gradually worked the GS into the groves and textured using a wire brush. Simple, but very effective.

The Green Stuff will also help support the wings.

After priming you can't tell any work had been to it. That's the best effect!

The GODS Demand PAINT!

And they shall have paint!

Today started out pretty cold and nasty, lots of rain, then cleared up around noon. Maybe it was just a low pressure front from the pacific coast? Perhaps it's the Chaos Gods demanding that their followers get a fresh coat? It's not my place to question, but to paint!

Khorne Daemons

Grey for the Blood God? I don't think so

Soul Grinders

Two coats of Flat black.

I left the other top half of a grinder in the death forge (aka my desk). He's still being punished for stealing (and eating) my ham sandwich, and is being punished by getting a green stuff makeover.

Bloodletters and Hounds

After 3 light coats of Burgandy

Ready to go clubbin' um-cha-um-cha-um-cha....

Blood (red) for the Blood God!

Last night I got everything ready to prime outside for when I got off work today (which is rare since I'm lazy). It seems the Gods have other things in mind, though, since today the tempature dropped and it's been raining non stop. NO blood for the Blood god today.

Still, I managed to get a test model done for some primers I picked up. Here are the results so far.

The one on the left was done with two quick coats of Krylon Burgandy and a Badab black wash. The left one is Krylon Flat Black followed by two thin coats of Mechrite red base.

Painting time: about 3 mins

Painting time: roughly 30 mins

Overall I like the results of the Burgundy coat better, especially since it saves a lot of time. For the purpose of this army I want to test my skills at faster painting troop choices. I also tried this on a Pewter model with much different results; it turned out with a pinkish hue and was scraping a little on the edges. Once the weather clears up I can test it some more.

Sunday Quickie

Just a quick update. Still on call so not much going on today lol. Right now I'm working on a conversion for my army.

Greater Daemon of Slaanesh: Keeper of Secrets.

The body is based on the original GW model. The face is a variation of things. The general idea is the straps on the face cover it's true identity, hence the Keeper of Secrets fluff. Most conversions I've seen are female, so I thought I'd try a male version of sorts.

What do you think so far? I'm working on a vector of the face to clarify the scheme a little. Should be up tomorrow. I'm also working on a Halloween banner for the site. Pics up soon :)

New Army: Chaos Daemons

After selling off most of my Ultra Marines, I decided to start another army. It came down to Tau, Eldar, and Chaos Daemons. I decided, obviously, on the latter and am pleased with the results. Don't get me wrong, I don't advocate the forces of evil, this just happens to be a pretty cool army :)

Chaos Spear Head, another Grinder, and a Chaos Lord.

I love plastic...

...and I HATE PEWTER!

Everything so far, minus a few headless hounds :D

What's next? Filling some gaps and cleaning details a little then priming. I'll have those pics up in a few days :)
